Thank you so much for a great first year. My anniversary gift to you is a show!
On 2/16 I’m bringing Schmave, Winnebago Vacation, and Adrian Aardvark to MCLA Design Lab in North Adams, Mass. 7 p.m., $5-$10 sliding scale. Melanie Glenn of Upstate Rubdown will also provide us with beautiful songs and her beautiful presence. This is going to be a banger, so get there on time! If we’ve written anything about you this year and you are nearby, GET TO THE GIG! FB EVENT HERE!
Here’s a sentimental rant as well:
I’ve spent more than a decade in a deep DIY rabbit hole–it’s my favorite. From running a print/online zine hybrid in my early 20s to starting this site in 2016, being able to access and experience DIY music has enriched my life, helped me make sense of the world around me, and given me an entrance into this beautiful subculture we all share (though I’ve sometimes had to press my shoulder hard on the door, or knock over the gatekeeper).
It means a lot to me to be able to give other underground musicians and DIY organizations love and attention through this project. We are all out there working for gas money, for news clips, for inclusion. We are all doing the important work of creating our own meaning and context in a society that sometimes seems manufactured, forced, inhuman.
When I play in a city I’ve never been to, for 12 or 18 or 56 young people who know and depend on these spaces, it feels sublime. It feels like America. It feels like the values I hold dear are alive and well all over the country, like our small world will always be here, and that there will always, in every place, be someone to fight for it.
When the DWP inbox gets flooded with emails from musicians looking for coverage, for listening, for connection, it feels the same. Keep them coming! THANK YOU!
