Jakals is a great, deep band from Boston and they’ll be at Luthier’s Co-Op in Easthampton on Sept. 1. I speak to their greatness from real experience; I met them this time last year at Club Passim’s Campfire. Fest (they played right after my band).
Jakals just released a really excellent EP called Bat Brains (embedded above) that is reminiscent of some of the best indie rock out there right now–singer Katie Solomon is giving off definite Mitski vibes, and I feel some Alvvays/Car Seat Headrest influences in the music, which is punctuating, strong, and well-paced.
In these days of weird, shy whispering over displaced guitar chords, I appreciate the professionalism and quality of a record that is clearly thought out and cohesive. I’m definitely a whole-album person, not a single-song person, and this EP doesn’t disappoint–it slaps from end to end, with some moments that are tender, some defiant, but all on the same great wavelength.
Their Luthier’s show is 7 p.m. on Sept. 1 with Matthew Medeiros and Marc Delgado and Wounded Knee. You should go–the Boston-Berkshires connection is actually pretty strong, and there’s a web of great music moving about through the Commonwealth right now.
