I’m at a point where stagnancy has become normal and under-stimulation occurs daily, caught somewhere between Having Once Lived and My Future, a place it seems I’ve been for quite some time now.
Spellling’s “Mazy Fly” is the perfect soundtrack for this environment, as if the only reason I’m having these feelings is because this album needed to save me in the current isolated circumstance that is my life.
Sacred Bones has a knack for featuring artists who endlessly allow me to settle into my head and come out with a more solid understanding of myself, but there’s something about Spellling’s new release that is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. A spiral of emotion that may, at times, sound off – only to eventually meet back at its center and effortlessly bring you down with it (or up????)
Quoted as her “reflecting on the thresholds of human progress and longing for a new and better tomorrow,” (taken from her bandcamp) all of my aforementioned feelings are completely rationalized, although I still am having trouble breathing while I listen to it. Maybe that’s unrelated; a personal problem.
Tia Cabral has done something with music I wish most artists could accomplish, however it’s also OK that they can’t.
“Mazy Fly” is something I want to hold close to myself and make sure nobody else can hear it.
I’d love to listen to this again for the first time, every time.
