I’ve always been a sucker for a good bass line. I used to be a HUGE Dave Matthews Band fan, and I remember geeking out over bass solos on their “live at central park” album. The whole band drops away leaving some round tones that really sell the hell out of the low end; it was pretty phenomenal. I personally hate playing the bass, the strings are too fat for my tiny fingers, but I love few things more than some driving and masterfully played bass licks.
Now, the track Cherry Sunshine has some of the grooviest and sensual bass playing Ive heard in recent memory. Andrew Scott Young’s bass barely stops to take a breath while everything evolves around it. For a whole 8 minutes this song morphs and breathes and glides around this central groove, and when its all over its easy to forget any time has passed at all.
I SHOULD ALSO MENTION that Natasha El-Serghany’s voice is this wonderful guiding light that cuts through the incredible tangle of sounds on this whole record. Her measured delivery and confident crooning make every song feel equally romantic and devastatingly cold.
Somesurprises entire new album is an absolute blessing of 90’s slacker-gaze and chugging krautrock that hits all the right beats for me, and maybe for you too.
IF CHERRY SUNSHINE DOESNT DO IT FOR YOU, THEN MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE COUNTRY SUN OR EMPTY THREAT (WHICH HAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE HOOKS, “YOUR LOVE IS AN EMPTY THREAT.”) IS MORE YOUR CUP O’ TEA.
