Kamikaze Girls, an English Riot Grrrl duo formed in 2014 who “want you to know it’s okay to be sad,” release their full-length album Seafoam today through Wiretap Records in the U.S. and Big Scary Monsters in Europe/elsewhere.

In anticipation of their record release, Kamikaze Girls produced a music video for the album’s first single, “Berlin,” above.

The duo, Lucinda Livingstone on vocals and guitar and Conor Dawson on drums, manage to sound larger than life with so few instruments. They drift effortlessly from the hard-edge of Riot Grrrl punk to a more melodic side, but the intensity of the lyrics never waivers. Their songs speak on anxiety, addiction, and mental health as a whole, and each song is frank and holds nothing back.

In their bio, the band states their “aim has always been to show their strength and solidarity to other young people in the same position, through their vitriolic fuzz-rock and to work alongside other bands in the scene to help stamp out gender stereotypes in music for good.”

While music audiences have mused in the past over whether you have to be sad to enjoy a sad song, Kamikaze Girls can fit both sides of the argument; while they aim to build kinship with fans who need the support, their music is more than enjoyable by any fans of punk and the Riot Grrrl movement.

Pick up Seafoam today through bandcamp or the Wiretap Records site. If you’re in the UK area you can catch them on a co-headlining tour through the month of June.
