The last thing Aaron Maine needs is more people writing about his music, but something feels very different about this most recent Porches record.
Ignoring all the mumbo jumbo surrounding how “artistically minimal” this album was supposed to be, its actually a cool and charmingly disjointed bedroom pop record. The song “Find Me” highlights this well. You have a dancey as heck beat that sounds like it belongs to a new-disco vinyl found at Mixtape in Bedstuy, and Maine’s sad-sack vocals crooning at half-speed over them. It’s like listening to someone make lyrics up on the fly to their favorite instrumental dance track. MOST of the record feels this way. Aaron Maine is the least excited I’ve ever heard on this album, but the music is mostly anything but bored. That contradiction of performance and energy creates a sort of unfinished quality that keeps the tunes in the realm of “honest and intimate”.
YOU COULD GIVE IT A LISTEN. ITS BETTER THAN THAT MOST RECENT DIRTY PROJECTORS WHINEY GARBAGE TUNES. FIGHT ME.
